UNCOMMON GOOD: BREAKTHROUGH

Friday, August 24th, 2012
Over the past few years, we got to call Chicago home. And we took some time finding a group of people that we felt aligned with our heart, our passion, and our vision.
Before we dive into all that was done with Breakthrough Urban Ministries, we want to preface it by saying why we became such huge fans and admirers of the people and their hearts at Breakthrough. Our hope for ourselves is that we would simply “See”. It’s easy to turn a blind eye to all that is going on around us. We want to be people who not only “see” the injustices, but then also act. Which is exactly what Arloa Sutter and her staff do.
HOMECOURT Appearance
In August of 2011, Kyle and Juliet attended Breakthrough’s outdoor summer hoops league.  On Chicago’s West Side, Kyle signed several hundred autographs and provided much encouragement to the neighbors who are trying to tip their neighborhood back to one that is a great place for kids to grow up.
“Repair the Wall” Fundraising Event
In November of 2011, Klayton, Kyle and Juliet helped Breakthrough raise the money needed to repair the exterior bricks on their building that houses their youth development program.  At the event Kyle had the chance his heart for city kids, his passion for Breakthrough, and his recent learning from a book, “Toxic Charity”.  Over $116,000 was raised at the event.
SEER Shirts for Year End Giving Campaign!
In December of 2011, SEER Outfitters shipped a Free Shirt to every Breakthrough donor who invested $50 or more in Breakthrough’s mission during the month of December.  During these tough economic times, Breakthrough wanted to say thank you to its donors for sticking with them.  SEER was proud to be the vehicle to say “Thanks!”
Chicago Bulls Energizabulls Fitness Center
In January of 2012, Kyle’s endorsement of Breakthrough paved the way for the Chicago Bulls to invest in Breakthrough as well.  The Bulls built one of their “EnergizaBulls” fitness centers for the children in East Garfield Park.  This investment of nearly $70,000 has allowed Breakthrough students to work out several times per week in a beautiful 1,000 sf workout center.
Jerseys/ Hoops League – Converse
In January 2012, KKF and Converse partnered to provide over 300 reversible mesh jerseys for boys/girls ages 8-18 to compete in Breakthrough HOOPS winter league in East Garfield Park.  This donation allowed the league to stay affordable for Breakthrough to operate, and also made the league feel like the “BigTime”.
Academic Awards Night
In May 2012, Kyle showed support and encouragement for the Breakthrough students by attending their Academic Awards Night in East Garfield Park.  Again, his presence was a huge encouragement to the students and placed great value on their academic achievements.
East Garfield Park Sports Festival Sponsorship – Hosted by Breakthrough
KKF and Seer Outfitters donated over 500 pieces of SEER clothing used as prizes and incentives for children completing their “PasSport” at the festival.  Over 375 children participated in introductory clinics in 15 sports.  Throughout the day, parents could sign up their kids for neighborhood youth programs in East Garfield Park.
Jerseys/ HOMECOURT – Converse
Again in the summer of 2012, KKF partnered with Converse to provide 300 reversible mesh jerseys for boys/girls to compete in Breakthrough’s HOMECOURT outdoor summer league.  The weekly program includes basketball games, grill out, art projects, and a bouncehouse.  Over 400 local residents attend and crime in the area has decreased over 52% in the area since the league began.
SEER and KKF send Breakthrough students to academic/basketball camp
During the summer of 2012, 10 Breakthrough students were able to attend a 5 week academic/hoops camp called Swish Dreams.  SEER provided complimentary shirts for people donating $15 or more to the project and raised almost $4,000 overall for the project.
“Stretch a dollar” video with Kyle and Juliet.
In February of 2012, Breakthrough highlighted this interview with Kyle and Juliet.  In it, they talk about what’s important to them when considering giving to a cause.  You can view it at :   http://breakthrough.org/article/165/kyle-korver-endorses-breakthrough-as-funding-priority
Thanks for writing this all up Bill!

DO THE KIND THING

Tuesday, July 31st, 2012

It is a great honor to partner with KIND’s Do the KIND Thing program and be able to give back to the city that has been so wonderful to me for the past couple of years. Our foundation will continue to have a presence here, even as I head to Atlanta. Through the partnership with Do the KIND Thing, we will be able to provide new school uniforms to hundreds of children in Chicago as they head back to school this year. Elements: Faith

Monday, March 19th, 2012

We love what this organization is doing.. in a world of 140 characters, it’s not very often that we think deeply, and extensively about who we are, and what it is that we stand for. What do you believe in.. so often we don’t really know. If you are in Chicago, we’d recommend going to see this. April 5th at Joe’s on Weed St. 7:00.

I believe in God.

I believe in some higher power.

I believe in Jesus.

I don’t believe in God.

I don’t really know if what’s out there is a who.

I believe in what can be proven.

I believe in science.

I’m spiritual, not religious.

I believe in myself.

I believe in Allah and Mohammad, his prophet.

I believe in love.

I am LDS.

I am Reformed.

I am Greek Orthodox.

I grew up in a cult, don’t ask.

I converted to Islam.

Jesus is the way.

Well, I don’t believe in the God that’s on our dollar bills.

I think, therefore I just am.

I follow the way of the Buddha.

I am Protestant.

I am an atheist.

I am an evolutionist.

I am not a believer.

I Am. . .

Most of us are or have used one of the lines above.  We’ve said, “I believe…” or “I am a…” to define ourselves or draw a boundary with another.  Amazingly enough, many of us, though we call ourselves a ________, aren’t able to articulate why we are and believe what we do. We tend to just state our what’s and I am’s without a why to back it up.  Why? Possibly the forth word and first question we ever learned, tends to slip away from us as we get older, while “it is what it is” takes over.

But the why is so important! The why is where you’re heart can be found, it is entirely unique and important, as its the centrifugal force of your story. The question, why do you believe what you believe? could be a springboard but instead often causes temporary muteness or ignoranity as bland answers that have long since expired in our hearts are offered in lieu of thought through, fought for, consciously experienced ones.

In all of our lives, there comes a time where we have to do more than decide what we believe, we have got to understand and begin to articulate why. Hopefully, this set of beliefs will continue to evolve over the course of our lives, forming and reforming as we grow.  These days, we’ve seen enough of the world to realize there are countless other folk out there with varying faiths, fights and ways. Seeing this causes some to go deep to uncover and discover their beliefs in a way that is entirely their own.  But many of us don’t realize we have both the right and responsibility to do this and instead fade into the haze of, “I grew up _____ but don’t really follow anything anymore.” For any belief to become our own, we must do the dirty work of questioning, proving, failing, confessing and accepting what comes back until it is entirely true.  You never forget when it happens, for those who go there and back, come alive in a way that makes you notice. Their faith isn’t something that gets them through… its what makes them flourish.  It is their x-factor. It causes you to want to know…why.

While we do the messy job of living, our story and other people’s stories cross influence and inspire us, as they challenge what we believe about our selves, life and God. People’s stories tend to be most influential in the process and formation of what we believe, but they cannot give us our authentic why.  Just as no two bodies, snowflakes or fingerprints are identical, no two stories are the same, nor should they be. Our unique Why, is where we can find common ground in this world.  What we believe tends to divide us… but our why’s come out of our shared human experience and often, with a sweet little combo of empathy and sincerity can unify us.

As you might be able to guess, our next Elements Session is titled: Why Do You Believe What You Believe. We will be hearing from four very different individuals who vary in story, religion and experience but they all know why they believe what they do.   We are hoping that this conversation will cause you to have your own, as you figure out why you believe what you believe.

ANNUAL COAT DRIVE- CHICAGO

Thursday, January 12th, 2012

The first real Snow of the year came, making this year’s Coat Drive timed correctly! And there are options to help for everyone.

1. Donate online

2. If you don’t live in Chicago, but live in Chicagoland, there are drop-off’s

3. Bring a coat to the Jan. 21st game vs. the Bobcats!

**Walk outside for a minute, then think about not having a coat to keep warm. We don’t want any of the kids at Mercy  Home or Victor Herbert Brown Elementary feeling like that.
